Wakefield Oktoberfest
Dust off those lederhosen and dirndls for the comeback of the downtown Wakefield’s Oktoberfest on Saturday, Oct. 2, featuring Bavarian dancing, a German oompah band, a Münchner Kindl parade, pretzels, schnitzel, bratwurst and locally brewed beer.
Kenny Tetzner, president of the Wakefield Village Association (WVA), says event planners keep the music and entertainers fresh every year. “We have something for everyone – from magicians, to Irish dancers, to princesses, to the authentic German dancers – this is a family event that continues to entertain and thrill.” Wakefield’s Okoberfest is now in its fifth year. “The day intentionally is geared toward youth and families during the day so that everyone can attend and enjoy the entertainment and food. Later in the evening we tend to see more adults as the music as the biergarten livens up.”
The festival, organized by WVA, is held among the shops and restaurants along historic downtown Main Street from noon to 11 p.m. A portion of Main Street, from Robinson Street to Kenyon Avenue, will be closed to vehicles from noon to 5 p.m. to make room for artisans and vendors. Explore your taste buds in the authentic Beirgarten. Enjoy German food, beer, and acts on two stages for only $10 (kids 12 and under are free) in the Beirgarten! You can purchase your tickets online in advance (highly advised) of the event at wakefieldvillageassociation.com.
The traditional tapping of the Oktoberfest kegs is set for 1:30 p.m., with a special “Münchner Kindl” parade inside the biergarten at 3:30 p.m. Costumed characters, a magician, princesses, local South Kingstown cheerleader performances, and more will run from noon to 5 p.m. The evening will mark the last RiverFire of the season on the Saugatucket and performances on two stages include aerial acrobatics, the TropiGals, an authentic Spanish flamenco performance, a fire dancer and four bands.
This year the WVA is excited to bring an authentic flamenco dancing troupe to perform at The Contemporary Theater stage at 6:30 p.m. “We enjoy hosting an authentic Oktoberfest event – from the music to the food and beer to the decorations and dancing – but we also truly enjoy bringing alternative entertainment to Wakefield that reflects the diversity of our community,” said Kenny Burke, WVA’s event coordinator and volunteer.
