World Frog Day!

Learn how to Frog Watch!

By Joyce Campbell, Macaroni Kid Southern RI Publisher March 20, 2023

March 20th is not only the first day of Spring, but also World Frog Day!  How can you and your family celebrate this day?  Why not become Frogwatchers?!

What is a Frogwatcher?  Well, Frogwatchers are Citizen Scientists that report the calls of frogs and toads in their area to a local FrogWatch USA Chapter.

Who can be a Frogwatcher?  Anyone!

Where do I do my “work?” Right in your own yard!  Although exploring a local park with family is always fun!

Is there training?  Yes!  Rhode Island’s local chapter is with RWPZoo.  You need to complete online training to learn the different local frog and toad calls.  There is a cost of $10 a household (2 adults and the children of the household). Training is open until March 31!

Is this important? YES!  According to RWPZoo, “Amphibian species are disappearing at an alarming rate across the globe due to a number of factors such as habitat loss, pollution, and disease. As a citizen scientist with FrogWatch USA, you can help save our frogs!”

Where do I sign up?  If you are in Rhode Island, head to Roger Williams Park and Zoo and follow the steps listed.  If you are outside Rhode Island, then go to Frog Watch USA.

This is such a cool activity to do with your children!  We started Frog Watching about 15 years ago, and we still love to do it!  My oldest was so into this; she was one of four children featured in the book titled "Citizen Scientist" by Dr. Loree Griffin Burns!  It is worth a read!

Happy World Frog Day!
