September is National Library Card Sign-up Month!! |
From the American Library Association
Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the American Library Association and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs-up for their own library card.
Throughout the school year, public librarians and library staff will assist parents and caregivers with saving hundreds of dollars on educational resources and services for students. From free access to STEAM programs/activities, educational apps, in-person and virtual homework help, and technology workshops to the expertise of librarians, a library card is one of the most cost-effective back-to-school supplies available.
Getting a library card can open a child's world in profound ways:
1. Fosters a Love for Reading:
A library card gives children access to a wide variety of books, helping them discover different genres, stories, and characters that spark their imaginations. The ability to explore books on their own terms builds a love for reading, which is key to lifelong learning.
2. Encourages Curiosity:
Libraries offer children the freedom to explore topics they’re curious about, from dinosaurs and outer space to mysteries and adventures. This curiosity helps develop critical thinking skills and a desire to learn more.
