Summer Reading Programs in Southern RI!

The Summer Reading Program, sponsored by the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS), is a cooperative effort among libraries in Rhode Island to motivate children and teens to read for pleasure and to help them maintain their reading skills during the summer months.

The Summer Reading Program starts on Monday, June 26!

You can sign up beginning on Tuesday, June 20.

The last day to earn prizes will be Friday, August 18.

Kids can earn up to 10 prizes, one for every five 15-minute reading sessions.

The library will also have these fun, fantastic events.
They’re free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Kids Program
For kids in grades K-5.  Read 15 minutes a day and come in each week with you reading log for cool prizes and special library events.

Teen Program

For youth in 6th grade and up.  Teens and Tweens read over the summer and may complete activities at the library for scratch off cards to win prizes or enter for our grand prize drawing at the Ice Cream Party.

Get a card by:

  • Signing up for Summer Reading
  • Checking out 3 or more items
  • Submitting a Book Review
  • Attending an SRP Event
  • Signing up for a library card

Students entering 5th-8th grades in the Chariho School District can use this program to help complete their summer reading book reports.

Students Entering Chariho High School may also use the Summer Reading Program to help complete their Summer Reading Studies.

Summer Reading June 27 to August 25, 2023

Read To Me Club (Birth-5)
Pre-Readers (birth-5) will receive a Read to Me bingo card and a prize for filling their whole card!

Youth Summer Reading (ages 6-12)
Independent readers (6-12) will receive a reading necklace and a bingo card when they sign-up. Children will earn colored beads and charms for getting Bingo and coming to the library for programs. Prizes will be awarded to kids who fill their whole bingo card!

Teen Summer Reading (ages 13-18)
Teens 13+ will receive a reading log and will earn a Next To Nowhere gift card after reading 5 books.

Youth Services Summer Reading!

Summer reading sign ups begin Monday June 26th! Ages 3-18 can come in and sign up for our paper tracking sheet or our
Beanstack app. Earn prizes, coupons, and raffle tickets based on how much time you read! Sign ups end Sat. 7/22, and

Children's Summer Program Kickoff Party

Families can get summer started by dropping by the Peace Dale Library between 5:00-7:00 pm for ice cream novelties or popsicles, sidewalk chalk, crafts, and a StoryWalk®. We'll be outside in good weather, inside if it rains!

Our Summer Reading Programs have begun! This year's theme is "Raise Your Voice", and we have activities, events, and end-of-summer prize drawings for all ages. Sign up now by visiting westerlylibrary.beanstack.org, or register in person at the library. Every person who registers will be automatically entered into our drawing, and have the opportunity to pick out a free book. Read on for more details on the programs for individual age groups, and check out our events calendar to see all the great programs throughout the summer.

 

Kids Summer Reading Program (birth-3rd grade)

Kids earn a badge for every 15 minutes read (or being read to!), writing book reviews, exploring different genres, attending programs, and participating in other fun challenges. You'll get a ticket for every badge you earn, which can be put towards any of the prizes in our end-of-summer drawing. Prizes include: a NASA Lunar Telescope, Orbeez Sensation Station, and a Mini Ride Along Scooter. Tween Summer Reading Program (4th-6th grade)

Tweens earn a badge for every 30 minutes of reading, writing book reviews, exploring different genres, attending programs, and participating in other fun challenges. You'll get a ticket for every badge you earn, which can be put towards any of the prizes in our end-of-summer drawing. Prizes include: a Golden Snitch Perplexus Game, Giant Sumo Balls, and a Minecraft Magnetic Puzzle Book.

Teen Summer Reading Program (7th-12th grade)

Teens earn a badge for every 60 minutes of reading, writing book reviews, exploring different genres, attending programs, and participating in other fun challenges. You'll get a ticket for every badge you earn, which can be put towards our end-of-summer drawing for a chance to win one of our amazing Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce gift cards. Visit the Teen page on our website for booklists, personalized recommendations, and more!

Adult Summer Reading Program (18 years old and up)

Adults also earn a badge for every 60 minutes of reading, as well as writing book reviews, exploring different genres, attending our programs, and participating in other fun challenges. You'll get a ticket for every badge you earn, which can be put towards our end-of-summer drawing for a chance to win a gift card from the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce, which can be used in hundreds of businesses and restaurants in the area.
